Ukraine rushes drinking water to flooded areas as environmental damage mounts from dam break

By VASILISA STEPANENKO (Associated Press)KHERSON, Ukraine (AP) — Authorities rushed drinking water to areas flooded by a collapsed dam in southern Ukraine on Wednesday as they managed a growing humanitarian and ecological disaster along a river that forms part of the front line in the 15-month war.The collapse of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam and emptying of its reservoir on the Dnieper River added to the misery the region has suffered for more than a year from artillery and missile attacks. With humanitarian and ecological disasters still unfolding, it is already clear that tens of thousands of people have been deprived of drinking water, many are homeless, crops are ruined, land mines have been displaced, and the stage is set for long-term electricity shortages. Some residents of Russian-occupied areas hit by high water complained that help was slow in arriving, with some stranded on roofs and streets passable only by boat in scenes more like natural disasters than wars. A small herd of cattle attacked a jogger running on a Boulder County trail on Tuesday morning, prompting a closure of the trailhead.Another person on the trail saw the jogger trying to protect herself on the ground, surrounded by about 15 or 20 cattle, most of them mothers with their calves, and called 911.Boulder County Parks and Open Space rangers responded within approximately 15 minutes, according to Erin Hartnett, one of the rangers who responded. The jogger was taken to the hospital, and her condition is unknown.According to Hartnett, the cows were most likely trying to protect their calves and the jogger did nothing wrong.“This time of year they’re just very protective of their calves,” Hartnett said. The trailhead was reopened in the early afternoon, once the rancher who leases the field moved the herd to a fenced-in pasture south of the trail.Although the herd had been in the field for a couple of weeks without incident, people have reported aggressive cattle in the area bef...

Plastic surgeon charged in teen patient’s death points finger at nurse as jury trial begins

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:47:22 GMT

A Colorado plastic surgeon charged with manslaughter in a teenage patient’s death should not be held criminally responsible because a nurse was actually at fault, the doctor’s attorneys argued at the start of his jury trial Tuesday.Dr. Geoffrey Kim, 54, is charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide in the death of 19-year-old patient Emmalyn Nguyen. The Brighton teenager went to Kim for a breast augmentation surgery in August 2019, when she was 18, but she suffered cardiac arrest after receiving anesthesia, fell into a coma and died 14 months later, in October 2020.Kim resuscitated Nguyen with CPR after her cardiac arrest, but then failed to call for emergency help for five hours even though she needed immediate care at a hospital, which was better equipped than Kim’s outpatient surgery center, prosecutors with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said during opening statements Tuesday.“Not only does he not call 911 himself, but (Dr. Kim) tells every other staff member...
