Biden administration hands Louisiana new power to expand carbon capture projects

The Biden administration is handing Louisiana regulators new power to attract and approve carbon capture projects at a time when the state’s influential energy sector wants to make the Gulf Coast a hub for the rapidly expanding industry.Louisiana will be able to issue permits for wells that store carbon dioxide, a critical component of carbon capture and removal technology. In all but two other states, the Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for permitting. Proponents of the change say it will speed up approvals of new projects that are critical for reducing climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions.Environmental groups had opposed the move, doubting that a state home to a concentrated stretch of oil, gas and petrochemical plants commonly called “cancer alley” is capable of proper industry oversight and protecting residents. The EPA said the Louisiana agreement includes safeguards to protect poorer, often majority-Black communities that live near those facilities — and tha...Pinstripe Bowl Winners

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the Constitution’s insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally as the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to decide whether Trump remains eligible to continue his campaign. The decision by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows follows a ruling earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court that booted Trump from the ballot there under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That decision has been stayed until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether Trump is barred by the Civil War-era provision, which prohibits those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. The Trump campaign said it would appeal Bellows' decision to Maine's state courts, and Bellows suspended her ruling until that court system rules on the case. In the end, it is likely that the nation's highest court will have the final sa...Denver businesses plan for minimum wage increase in 2024

DENVER (KDVR) — The start of 2024 will bring an increase in Denver’s minimum wage to $18.29 per hour.Denver's minimum wage adjusts every year based on the consumer price index to ensure wages keep up with Denver’s cost of living, according to a release from the city. "We are seeing places experiment with different models of service charges, like the back of the house fee or happy employee fee," Larson said.Tipped employees, according to Larson, also will see the dollar increase. But the city said employers can still claim up to $3.02 in tip credits pe...Maine bars Trump from ballot as U.S. Supreme Court weighs state authority to block former president from elections

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s Democratic secretary of state on Thursday removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the Constitution’s insurrection clause, becoming the first election official to take action unilaterally in a decision that has potential Electoral College consequences. While Maine has just four electoral votes, it’s one of two states to split them. Trump won one of Maine’s electors in 2020, so having him off the ballot there should he emerge as the Republican general election candidate could have outsized implications in a race that is expected to be narrowly decided. The decision by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows follows a December ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court that booted Trump from the ballot there under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Colorado is a Democratic-leaning state that is not expected to be competitive for Republicans in November.Bellows found that Trump could no longer run for his prior job because ...Bodycam video shows arrests after robbery of SW Miami-Dade couple in Lambo; 1 suspect charged with attempted murder

Officer-worn body camera video captured the takedown of two men following an armed robbery of a Southwest Miami-Dade couple earlier this year, and detectives said at least one of the suspects is also wanted for attempted murder. The bodycam video of the June 23 arrests, acquired exclusively by 7News, shows a driver getting out of a vehicle at a fast-food drive-thru and complying with officers’ demands to get on the ground.“I’ve got eyes on the passenger,” an officer is heard saying in the video.“Come to us, come to us, come to me,” an officer is heard telling the driver as the suspect crawled toward them. The duo who were taken into custody were wanted in connection to the June 22 carjacking of a couple outside of their Southwest Miami-Dade house.Bodycam video captured victim Peter Gonzalez as he described the incident to a responding Miami-Dade Police officer.“He came out of the car with a gun,” said Gonzalez.Speaking with 7News after t...Boston City Council ‘not serious about public safety’: outgoing president Flynn says

Outgoing City Council President Ed Flynn said the vote to block $13.3 million in federal counter-terrorism funding for the metro region showed the council was “not serious about public safety,” an attitude he hopes will shift with four new members.Flynn, who had been pushing last week for an emergency meeting to reconsider the funding should the mayor fail to refile the federal grant by the end of the year, has since backed off of that last-ditch effort in 2023.“I wasn’t able to mobilize my colleagues together to assemble for a meeting,” Flynn told the Herald. “There wasn’t any support for it. So, I’m committed to working with the mayor in January to get this passed.”Flynn, whose two-year term as the body’s president ends this month, is now seeking a new vote on the matter by the end of January, after four new councilors are sworn into office. Mayor Michelle Wu, through a spokesperson, has already stated her intention to refile the grant in the new year, after the council turns over...Celtics’ Jaylen Brown misses game vs. Pistons, but injury not expected to be long term

Jaylen Brown missed Thursday’s game against the Pistons due to a low back contusion, but the Celtics star is not expected to miss extended time because of the injury.“He just woke up sore today,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said. “So I don’t envision it being long term.”Brown sustained the injury in Monday’s Christmas Day win over the Lakers when he collided with LeBron James. The Lakers star accidentally tripped up Brown and kneed him in his lower back, causing both to fall and stay on the floor for several moments. Brown went straight to the locker room but returned to finish the game. It’s unclear if Brown – who missed just his second game of the season – will miss Friday’s second leg of the back-to-back against the Raptors.Without Brown, the Celtics started Al Horford alongside Kristaps Porzingis as Mazzulla continues to experiment with double-big lineups. Though the league has shifted to faster, smaller, shooting-focused lineups, the C’s believe they have a strength with their fr...Hot Property: A flawless estate in Brookline

The 40th touchdown catch of Marcedes Lewis’ career was fairly easy. No, it didn’t unfold exactly as designed Sunday with the veteran tight end unable to disengage from linebacker Jesse Luketa the way he wanted. But after Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields faked an inside handoff to Roschon Johnson and an end-around give to Darnell Mooney, a game of playground football broke out.Fields’ preferred read — DJ Moore on a shake route to the left — was taken away. And Lewis was unable to release cleanly into his corner route. But Fields and Lewis both used their eyes and instincts to improvise. The quarterback bought time on the move to his right and his tight end found a patch of empty space. As Luketa peeled off and charged Fields to take away a possible scramble, Lewis sat down behind the “O” in Soldier Field’s north end zone.“All I did was just play football,” Lewis said. “I went where (Luketa) wasn’t.”Fi...Latest news
