Can at-home DNA tests predict how you’ll respond to your medications?

(The Conversation) - Have you ever wondered why certain medications don’t seem to work as well for you as they do for others? This variability in drug response is what pharmacogenomic testing hopes to explain by looking at the genes within your DNA.Pharmacogenomics, or PGx, is the study of how genes affect your response to medications. Genes are segments of DNA that serve as an instruction manual for cells to make proteins. Some of these proteins break down or transport certain medications through the body. Others are proteins that medications target to generate a desired effect. As pharmacists who see patients who have stopped multiple medications because of side effects or ineffectiveness, we believe pharmacogenomic testing has the potential to help guide health care professionals to more precise dosing and prescribing. How do PGx tests work?PGx tests look for variations within the genes of your DNA to predict drug response. Marco Rossi has made the Wild roster out of camp before, last season, in fact, after earning a goal and five assists in just the preseason games. But it didn’t stick, and he found himself back in Iowa after 19 games. That won’t do this season for either Rossi or the Wild.“We’re looking for Marco Rossi to make our hockey club and be an impact player with the Minnesota Wild,” head coach Dean Evason said this week. The Wild are cap-strapped and high on the No. 9 overall pick in the 2020 draft, and Rossi is anxious to find a home in the NHL after last season’s setback and a serious bout with myocarditis that essentially wiped out his first season of professional hockey. It’s almost hard to believe he’s still only 22 years old.“I want to make the team and just want to show that I’ve improved over the last few years, and that I gained confidence and that I know what to do,” Rossi said as the Wild started training camp last week at TRIA Rink in downtown St. Paul.To that end, the Austria nativ...Business People: U.S. Bank expands into health care banking services

Ballot submitted to the Associated Press on Saturday night …Let’s cut to the issue that’s sure to elicit significant reaction: Yes, I ranked Washington State above USC. The Cougars are No. 11 on the ballot, one spot above the Trojans. And honestly, it took about a nanosecond to reach that conclusion. Before we compare and contrast, note that their current positions represent significant changes from the ballot submitted a week ago, when USC was No. 7, nine spots ahead of the Cougars.I jumped Penn State, Utah, Oregon and WSU over the Trojans after all four beat ranked teams and USC struggled with Arizona State. (Notre Dame also jumped USC after losing on the final play to Ohio State.)In the two-team ballot showdown, the Cougars (4-0) have been more impressive against a far stronger schedule. In fact, the only reason to rank USC (4-0) ahead of WSU at this point is preseason hype and/or brand bias. Because the resumes aren’t comparable.USC’s opponents (Nevada...Latest news
