Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 14:56:33 GMT

In the days before Joe Ryan returned from the injured list on Saturday, the Twins talked about the possibility of going to a six-man rotation. Instead, they opted to piggyback Bailey Ober, whose innings they are carefully monitoring, with Dallas Keuchel, who came on in relief.Ober, who is well past his previous career high in innings, gave up five runs in four innings before making way for Keuchel, who turned in five scoreless innings after him. Monday, the Twins finally cleared the rotation picture up by optioning Ober to Triple-A in a surprising twist. Left-handed reliever Kody Funderburk will take his roster spot, called up to the major leagues for the first time. It’s a tough break for Ober, who has been one of the Twins’ most consistent starters this season after beginning the season in Triple-A as the sixth man in a five-man rotation. An injury to Tyler Mahle at the end of April cleared the way for him to return to the major leagues. Since then, he has posted a 3.67...

WEST POINT, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- West Point officials opened a long forgotten capsule on Monday that was found inside the base of a monument. The container was discovered in May during a statue restoration project. It is believed it was put there by a group of cadets sometime in the 1820s.The box didn't meet expectations, however. Historians only found a layer of silt they think settled at the bottom because moisture got into the container. But officials said they aren't done investigating the mystery. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! "We don't want to think they went through all this trouble to not put anything in it, so what we are gonna do is we will take the silt, put it through a fine mesh screen, and find any remains and determine what if anything was in here," West Point archeologist Paul Hudson said. "Potentially, it was something small and organic that may have come apart over time, but we are just not certain."Historians a...

49ers trade Trey Lance: Is he better off in Dallas?

Having been around a team that pushed all its chips into the middle of the table for JaMarcus Russell and come up empty, it’s clear the damage that can be done to a franchise that whiffs with a premium draft pick on its quarterback of the future. The 49ers aren’t the Raiders, though, and Trey Lance is the farthest thing from Russell in terms of commitment and dedication. I was covering an Andre Ward fight at Oracle Arena in 2010 and when Russell came in fashionably late: The booing was so fierce Ward appeared confused while he wailed away at an overmatched opponent against the ropes. The last time Lance played for the 49ers, in the second preseason game, he was greeted by cheers from the home crowd at Levi’s Stadium. The Lance gamble was a regrettable mistake — coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch admitted as much in postgame press conferences late Friday night — but it’s hardly the ruination of the franchise. The effect in future years ...
