The uncertain future of the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor Anchal Vohra is an international affairs commentator and was based in Beirut until recently. The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) was launched on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi amid much fanfare.A key pillar of United States President Joe Biden’s Indo-Pacific and Middle East strategies, the American leader hailed the project as a “real big deal.’’ European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen called it “nothing less than historic,’’ and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — under whom country has decided to try and shake up China’s global supply chain dominance — sold IMEC as the “basis of world trade for hundreds of years to come.”Described as Biden’s alternative to China’s Belt and Road Initiative — Beijing’s multinational infrastructure and trade project — the West hopes IMEC can limit China’s rising geopolitical influence. However, the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has now put a spanner in the works, and it is stalling IMEC’s development. With war raging...

10 Lords-a-leaping: The most ludicrous House of Lords moments of 2023 LONDON — Britain’s honors system will be back in the spotlight Saturday as another procession of celebrities, government cronies and community heroes are handed New Year’s gongs. Up for grabs will be the usual mix of archaic titles, royal-approved medals and — best of all — jobs for life as lawmakers in the House of Lords. With the 12 days of Christmas in full swing, POLITICO homes in on those enjoying the highest rung of the British honors system with a look back at the 10 most ludicrous Lords moments of 2023. As ever, there were plenty to choose from.10. Jobs for the (nepo) boys The vast majority of peers are appointed by the government, but, astonishingly, 92 members of the Lords are still there thanks to old-fashioned English nepotism, their titles passed down the generations from father to son. If that wasn’t weird enough, Rishi Sunak decided this year that some of these ermine-clad nepo-babies were also the best men available to hold top positions in his ...

Unlocked: Top 10 behind-the-paywall stories of 2023 It’s been a busy year in EU policy land as lawmakers, leaders and officials raced to tie up loose ends before the European Parliament election next June, with some efforts more successful than others. The EU’s green ambitions became the center of a right-wing backlash as the real-life impact of proposed reforms started to bite. Europe’s drive for manufacturing self-sufficiency gained new political prominence, upending the bloc’s budget and competition rules and reshaping the way Europe thinks about trade. And policymakers started to lay out how they’ll govern new technologies, with an agreement on an AI act and new enforcement of the bloc’s digital rules. But POLITICO’s crack team of policy journalists have also been beavering away on plenty more juicy scoops and insider takes that didn’t initially make it over the paywall. So, as a special, extremely nerdy, Christmas gift for all the policy wonks out there, here’s a selection of our most popular articles.The...

Why Germany’s lifeless coalition won’t die

Why Germany’s lifeless coalition won’t die BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a simple promise to Germans after taking office: “You’ll never walk alone.” Scholz, a Social Democrat, borrowed the phrase from Liverpool Football Club’s anthem and has invoked it, mantra-like, at moments of tension, such as when Russia cut off natural gas deliveries to Germany, sending prices through the roof. Yet after two years in office, it is Scholz who walks increasingly alone amid a flurry of crises that have rocked and divided his three-way coalition with the Greens and the fiscally conservative Free Democrats (FDP), prompting voters to question whether the chancellor is up to the job and if his government should serve a full four-year term. To add insult to injury, Scholz received a fresh dose of COVID just in time for Christmas. After a year in which the German chancellor nearly poked one of his eyes out and won the dubious distinction of being the least-liked chancellor in his country’s mo...

Calls to remove Trump's star from Hollywood Walk of Fame draw mixed reactions LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A petition to remove former President Donald Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame has received thousands of signatures, but the decision on whether to get rid of it is just as controversial as the man whose name is on it. Andrew Rudick, who started the petition in 2020, has garnered more than 4,200 signatures in three years.
